2025 marks a significant milestone for John - 50 years since he first entered the Financial Services arena. Starting at the age of 16 with the Halifax Building Society in 1975, John gained the Diploma in Chartered Building Societies Institute. After seven years, he transitioned into the insurance sector with Prudential, during the iconic era of the “man from the Pru.”
In 1984, John moved into the independent financial sector, where he and his business partner opened new offices in Brixham and Paignton. Eventually, their business was acquired by a large national IFA firm. In 1999, John joined another national IFA firm, where he built a strong local business and worked as a supervisor within the company. When that firm was sold in 2015, John took the opportunity to set up his own directly regulated firm, John Mitchell Financial Advisers Ltd, primarily serving his hometown of Brixham and the Torbay area.
A chance meeting in 2022 with Mike Harms, Director of Medical and General, led to a plan for semi-retirement and more time spent with family. John has always been proactive about the succession of his business, ensuring that he worked with a company that shared his values of a strong work ethic and high-level personal client service.
After getting to know the company, John Mitchell Financial Advisers Ltd was acquired by Medical and General in December 2023. With this acquisition, John continues his work, focusing on mortgages and protection, and contributing to the growth of the Medical and General brand in his local area.
John is also qualified to offer advice in the Equity Release sector, holding a Diploma from the Personal Finance Society and membership with the Chartered Insurance Institute.
In his spare time, John enjoys gardening and spending time with his family, especially his two young granddaughters, who he says “help to keep him young.”
